29 May 1889. Postcard from John Faulk (New York City, New York, USA) to his son, John Arthur Faulk (Cleveland, Ohio, USA)

A 3″ x 5″ postcard written in pencil and addressed in red ink. Some dates and notes were added and re-inked in ballpoint by unknown person. Fading is evident but still very readable. The postcard was written and mailed by John Faulk while on a layover in New York on the first leg of his trip to relocate to Australia. File size 0.5 MB.
13 January 1890 (postmarked). Letter from John Faulk (Rosalie, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia) to his son, John Arthur Faulk (Cleveland, Ohio, USA)

Letter written with red ink on 3 loose sheets of medium weight, lined paper, 9 3/4″ x 8″ in size. Each sheet is folded to create 4 pages of writing (2 on front, 2 on back). Pages are embossed with a dove which was applied when the pages were folded, located 7/8″ from the top, near the center fold. The year “1890” is penciled, by an unknown person, onto the header. Damage is primarily tearing along the folds, about 2″ in length. Envelope is 5 1/4″ x 3 1/8″ with the stamp cut out, though most of the postmark is visible. The PDF file contains images of the envelope and images of each “page,” cropped and placed in the correct order for easy reading. File size 4.7 MB.

Letters written with black ink on 3 and a half loose sheets of medium weight, lined paper, 9 3/4″ x 8″ in size. Each full sheet is folded to create 4 pages of writing (2 on front, 2 on back). One page is embossed with a dove which was applied when the pages were folded, located 7/8″ from the top, near the center fold. Damage is primarily tearing along the folds. A couple pages have torn completely across sheet and were taped. Envelope is 5 1/4″ x 3 1/8″ with the stamp cut out, leaving only half of the postmark. The PDF file contains images of the envelope and images of each “page,” cropped and placed in the correct order for easy reading. File size 6.6 MB.

01 July 1895 and 24 November 1895. Letters from Fred Faulk (Graceville, Brisbane, Australia) to his brother, J. Arthur Faulk (Cleveland, Ohio, USA)

Two letters, each written on a single sheet of light weight, lined paper, 10 1/2″ x 8 1/2″. Each sheet is folded to create 4 pages of writing (2 on front, 2 on back). Bleed-through of ink makes reading difficult in some sections. Damage is primarily tearing in the center on a fold of one sheet. The two letters are dated nearly 5 months apart. The letters were stored together in a 5 1/4″ x 3 1/8″ envelope with full stamp and postmark. Unknown person re-inked with ballpoint pen the years on each letter and added a date on the envelope. The PDF file contains images of the envelope and images of each “page,” cropped and placed in the correct order for easy reading. File size 4.7 MB.
08 July 1900. “Letter Card” from John Faulk (Wellington, New Zealand) to his son, John Arthur Faulk (Cleveland, Ohio, USA)

Letter written in pencil on one side of a single sheet of medium weight card stock, measuring 5 1/4″ x 6 7/8″. One side of the card is printed in purple ink with postage, an area to place the address, and depictions of landmarks and wildlife of New Zealand. The letter is compose on the reverse, blank side. Further inspection of the perforated edge indicates that the original sheet was larger on all sides with some method of sealing the folded card. The receiver of the letter card tears off the perforated edge to open the card. The address was originally written in pencil. An unknown person went back over the address in ink and added the year 1900. The added stamp and all postmarks are in tack. The PDF file contains images of the front and back sides of the letter card. File size 1.4 MB.

Damage is primarily weakening and dirt along the center fold and some staining along one edge. None of the damage interferes with legibility. Envelope is 4 5/8″ x 3 5/8″ with the stamp and postmark fully intact, The PDF file contains images of the envelope and images of each “page,” cropped and placed in the correct order for easy reading. The letter is composed on a single side of each sheet, except on the fourth sheet where both are used. Damage is primarily weakening and dirt along the folds. The ink has faded but the writing is still legible. The envelope is 5 1/4″ x 4 1/8″ with the stamp torn out but leaving much of the postmark.
